A New Future for a 99er. Great News!
I wanted to post this email from Michael Marks who’s correspondence with me is featured in greater detail in the post below this one. The man has been hired and I hope this will be viewed as a message of hope and a real example of determination and grit for everyone. I don’t think I could say with absolute confidence that I could have held up so well as Michael.
Be advised that my role along with my sister Cindi is hardly worth mention compared to all of those that are facing the ugly reality of unemployment. While I am flattered that Mr. Marks would like to acknowledge the forum this web-site may have provided, (to see his “good news” email to me keep reading), it is I who is humbled by the inventiveness, creativity, and positivity presented by the likes of Mr. Marks.
The “idea” or “theory” that was to me the essence of…
- “I will overcome this…”
- “I can take action…”
- “I have a choice in how I respond…”
…is put into real action by Michael and it is the reason I presented the narrative with Michael in the post below.
Could I have been so positive and up-beat? I’m not so sure.
I encourage the reader to explore the content Michael Marks has created in the links to his site and video’s.
If you have any practical ideas that feature results on a personal level like Michael or any pointers or skills that may help another 99er please let me know so I can advance some more positive outcomes. Keep in mind ideas don’t have to be web based. If your not a video making kinda a Gal or Guy and have non-techie ideas I’d like to hear those too. If there is something that you’d like to learn how to do why not post it here?
After seeing some of the resumes posted here I’ve got to say that there’s plenty of talent out there! I hope those who can help will…
Here’s the good news from Michael…
“Dan,
I wanted to give you thanks for supporting so many people in their struggles finding
work and providing an outlet for there voices to be heard each and everyday. It’s very stressful for millions of people with the loss of jobs throughout this country.
99ers like myself feel like dirty laundry, a forgotten resource, angry about billions being sent to rebuild other counties while starving our own. I’ve had these feelings but never lost hope, never stopped trying, never stopped posting resumes, I never gave up.
People NEVER EVER GIVE UP!
I’ve good news! After my layoff from Kennedy Space Center in October 1, 2008 (that’s,740+ days) I have employment starting Monday the 18th. YaHoo!
I’m ok with a 50% loss in income because my eyes see opportunity, it’s much better
than setting in the library posting resumes all over the country! ‘Perspective’
would be another good word!
I just wanted to send some good news and say thanks Dan for what your doing for so
many people, me included.
Thank you.
Michael Marks”

What are the rest of us going to do until we get a job? Hope cannot feed the kids bellies and make the house payment if you still live in one that is.
You cannot work unless some third party provides you with a job? That is sad. There are millions of jobs out there that provide enough income to survive but most people are too good or proud to take them. Although there is a certain mindset in this country against dumpster diving, collecting cans et cetera they are profitable. You can sit around with a ‘woe is me’ attitude or you can go out and make money.
If your house is an albatross dump it and move into a camper. My girlfriend and I lived in a VW bus (7 years) until we could afford to buy a 17′ Traveleze trailer, we camped out from 1970 until 1986 when we could afford to pay cash for our house. We did this without ‘jobs’ in the traditional sense although we were never without work. When you work for someone else you get paid for 10% of your labor, when you work for yourself you get paid for 100% of your labor, you do the math.
Congratulations Michael. It’s always great news when one of us scores a job! Now that’s one down and only a few million to go! Like the V.P. said everybody “Hang in there”.
I am so overjoyed at Michael’s new found job. I only hope that I could be so lucky. I send hugs and kisses to Michael and let him know that as a 99er I too feel depressed and upset that nothing is happening. Congrats again to Michael and may he become as successful in this venture as he was before.
THIS HAS GONE ON TO LONG ,THIS CONGRESS MAKES ALL THESE MILLIONS OF PEOPLE WAIT FOR HELP THAT THEY REALLY NEED , I JUST DONT KNOW WHY THEY WOULD PUT SO MANY IN MISSERY THEY NEED TO PASS HR 589 RIGHT NOW THIS WEEK (YESTERDAY)….
You folks should have saved your money and you would not be in this position. How many of YOU 99ers shopped at thrift stores, dented can stores, day old bread stores, drove a 25 year old car, and never ran the A/C before this recession problem????? Until 2 years ago, I grossed over 150K a year with the wife’s income. My family of 5 lived on just under 30K a year in Upland, Ca. I OWN my home (worth over 600K) and my 25 year old car, a 1985 Suburban with 400K on it. My children (3) are all 4.0 students and have earned their way into Ivy League colleges on scholarships. I have managed to save over 1.8 million dollars and because I am a frugal investor, I am now worth over 4.3 million. YES, I did loose close to 1Mil, BUT, I still have over 4 million dollars. 95% of my friends lived well beyond their means and are now broke. IT IS ALLTHEIR FAULT!!! One must learn to SAVE 30% of their net income at minimum. If all of the country had done so and not bought new cars, boats, shopped at whole foods market, purchased clothing at Sax, take vacations, you would probably be in the same position as me. And BTW, I am DEBT FREE!!!! I am now purchasing homes in Riverside County, Ca for 25% of what they were 2-3 years ago. I will then rent them for at least 1300 per month (this is on the low side). SO, after I purchase 7 of these homes for appx 140K each, I will collect 91K per year in rent. After investing just over 1Million dollars, this will give me a return of over 9% for doing nothing but investing my hard SAVED money!!! I know if I had played the stock market aggressively, my financial situation would be MUCH better. But if there is one thing I have learned from this mess it is simply to INVEST WISLEY!! If many of you had lived like I have, you could be doing the same thing. ALSO, after my 26 weeks of UI, I turned down any more payments as I paid into the system to only receive 26 weeks of benefits. I don’t take what I have not earned.
Something you 99ers are not thinking of, the MAIN reason tier 5 or anything close will NEVER happen is according to my math, there are appx 1.5 million people who qualify for the 99ers situation. IF a tier 5 type of bill is passed, the unemployment rate will go up no less than 1.5%. This TODAY would have unemployment at well over 10%. Now that the GOP has taken over they will get the economy going again with tax cuts for people like me, so I will invest my hard SAVED money to help business grow therefore I can hire some of you and I will benefit with more money in my pocket!!! You will benefit with employment provided by one of my corporations created by me SAVING MONEY!!!
Please do not misunderstand me. I am VERY good at what I do and I have not been able to find employment for over 2 years, it is REALLY tough out there. I have had 5 interviews out of state which the prospective employers paid for and I am still unemployed. My gripe is that people need to be more frugal with their income and quit trying to purchase things you can’t afford. For example, if you go on daily walks, bring a bag so you can pick up any cans or bottles you might see. Look for lost change and other valuable items on the sidewalk and street. I will bet I have picked up over 1K in the last 10 years on my walks and invested it to create more wealth. It also makes your neighborhood nicer to live in.
Just something to think about…………
Both parties are criminally insane, the only difference between them is the income of their victims. I find it odd that you believe that the GOP has taken over, 1/2 of Congress is not control of the government.
Congratulations to Michael. I am not so lucky. I think this is week 3 in the car. Selfishness rules this country along with greed. I did not amass a bucket load of cash. But, as a Christian, I shared, donated, and always ended up paying for a miser friend. Mr. Miser hasn’t called in weeks—but I don’t miss him and surely learned a lesson. Love thy neighbor, but donate to charity not selfishness. Greedy corporations put us where we are, and the government is run by Big Co. Thankfully this polluted earth is showing its age. Do you really think we can fix Japan? Read the news which is hard to find! But, love the people of this planet until the final note. Charity is nicer than greed. And the car is safer than the street. Peace and hope. God Bless…99 red balloons go bye
Dear May 24 and not a waister;
Your shopping habits are nothing new to myself and my family. I’ve never made more than $12,000 in my life. When I was younger I worked two jobs, and thought nothing of it. You are blessed and I’m happy for you but to think all 99′ers have been waistful and this mess is all their fault in unfair and untrue. I was born with brain damage due to a medical mistake, my parents did not sue the hospital, they simply couldn’t deal with me, so I went from home to home always the new kid at school, abused and believed I deserved it; that somehow God has marked me from the beginning. I went out on my own at 16 and have worked ever since, at positions that most people call interm, but they have been my lifes work. But today I can’t even give my service away, I’ve offered. Not even Mc D’s will hire me. I thought it was my fault, I got old or perhaps it was my health because I couldn’t afford my medications; then I read an artical that made it clear this is not my fault. The man said …..this is a grotesque abdication of responsibility…..4 years ago our unemployment was below 4%…..there is nothing wrong with the American worker; it’s our leaders that have failed us, lost our jobs and have abandoned us. Today there is 5 openings for every 1 person. Where do you think I fall in that battle; if an employer can get a BA person to do my job they will, and the BA will take my job they need to eat too. Our leaders removed the restraints that kept Wall Street honest and they ran with it, then our leaders tossed money at them to bail them out without telling them they need to provide us with jobs, not just through themselves one huge party. Again I’m happy for you, however you’re no better than me, you were simply born in a better hospital.
Lisa,
Your brain damage is not reflected in your writing, except for misspelling wasted and throw your post was very well written. Contact me off list at stcfarms@geneseo.net with a list of your resources, skills and location and I will try to help you come up with an underground economy job. We do not need the powers that be, they need us.

I am 62 and I did and still do live thrifty. I sold jewelry and personal clothing and anything that wasn’t strapped down, when I lost my job in dec 2009. I have a 2001 car that is paid off. Unfortunately I have also had to put 2000.00 into my car to keep it running. I am not on drugs, I look for jobs ALL THE TIME. within reason for my age I will do anything. Walmart did not call me after I applied. I have called without any response. I am scared. My husband is 77 and is collecting soc sec. He works at Frys and works hard. It makes me sick that I am younger and not working. The underground jobs sounded good to me.If it is ligament. Our idea of eating out before i lost my job was a 5.45 pizza from dominos
You seem to have what you need to join the underground economy, transportation, enough income to live on and you have not given up. There are many possibilities out there, the underground economy does not care how old you are, they care what you can produce.
I have been out of work for close to 3 years. I have saved my whole life. I paid off my house and still, due to things not under my control, I am fearful of losing it all. The economy is in bad shape due to those who are greedy and they have ruined it for the masses. I am concerned that we are a bankrupt country without any solutions. My idea, which may not be legal, is to lay off every CEO, and hire 100 people at the bottom with his/her salary. This will get rid of the unreasonably compensated individuals, many who helped cause our problems, and at the same time, lower the unemployment problem. Then the housing situation will probably improve too. Also, we should allow companies to repatriate the overseas money with no penalty, only if it is used to hire unemployed people. The longest unemployed individuals should be hired first.
